the paper where the photo appeared (this is a wider crop):
"The hot weather last night took Weegee,
the photographer, to the lower East Side,
where he found these children sleeping on a tenement
fire escape at Irving and Rivington Streets.
Weegeee says he gave the kids $2 for ice cream,
but their father took charge of the dough."
Kind of an unseasonal choice given that it's the middle of winter, but I just saw a small show of Weegee's photos at Steven Kasher Gallery (Weegee: Naked City) and this was one I hadn't remembered seeing before. Plus I'm just a sucker for kittens. So this can be "Guest Cat" too.
Two other exhibitions of Weegee's photographs are currently showing: Murder is My Business is up at the International Center of Photography in NYC and Weegee: Naked Hollywood at MoCA.
William McCleary in Naked City:
He will take his camera and ride off in search of new evidence that his city, even at her most drunken and disorderly and pathetic moments, is beautiful.
